Why can I hear a silent whistle?
Silent in the context of a dog whistle means the range of the whistle exceeds the frequency that most humans can hear but to the dog it will sound like a normal whistle - each dog like humans has a different range of hearing. In humans’ frequencies from 2000 to 20000 hertz but dogs can hear very high frequencies up to 48000 hertz. As a human you will hear the lower frequencies produced by the silent whistle but these will not be so loud as a normal whistle - your dog will hear the high frequencies that you cannot (these high frequencies are silent to a human hence the name silent whistle) How do I find the right pitch for my dog?
Start at the low frequencies and work your way up the scale of frequencies until your dog's ears prick up or another physical sign is given - different dogs hear different frequencies. This is achieved by loosening the locking nut and turning the screw - once the correct frequency is found tighten the lock nut.
Why use a Silent Whistle for training or obedience?
A silent whistle can be heard by a dog up to 400m away, if trained for recall with a silent whistle a dog out of sight but within range can be recalled. With practice and patience different calls can be given on the whistle to train a dog to sit, stand, lie down, stop barking, to go away or to come back. Patience and time are required to train a dog to any command whether voice, whistle or clicker - there is no miracle cure.
